GOUROCK — In support of Mental Health Awareness Week, a community dog walk will be held in Gourock on Sunday, May 18, inviting locals to come together for a gentle stroll along the waterfront—whether or not they own a dog.
Organized by the mental health charity Mental Health Matters in partnership with pet care platform Rover.com, the event aims to provide a welcoming and inclusive environment for individuals seeking companionship, fresh air, and support. Participants will gather at 12 p.m. on Ashton Road before setting off along the scenic Gourock promenade.
The initiative is part of a UK-wide series of dog walks designed to highlight the importance of mental wellbeing and the positive role pets can play in emotional support. According to research cited by the campaign, 84% of dog owners say they turn to their pets for comfort during difficult times, while one in five believe their dog has saved their life.
Bryony Gordon, founder of Mental Health Matters, emphasized the healing power of movement, social connection, and animal companionship. “We know that getting outside, moving our bodies, and connecting with others can have a profoundly positive effect on mental wellbeing,” she said. “When you add dogs into the mix, that impact is even greater.”
She continued: “Dogs provide us with love and connection. Our partnership with Rover will help more people access these benefits, bringing communities together to support each other in a safe and welcoming space.”
The event is free to attend and open to everyone, reinforcing the message that no one has to face mental health challenges alone.
