New Breathing Space Benches Installed Across Scotland to Mark Mental Health Awareness Week

In a collaborative effort to promote mental health and wellbeing, Samaritans Scotland has partnered with Network Rail, NHS 24’s Breathing Space, and ScotRail to install new Breathing Space benches at key locations including Dumfries, Dundee, Uddingston, and Fort William.

The initiative offers a dedicated space for individuals to pause, reflect, engage in conversation, or simply enjoy a quiet moment to support their mental health. These benches were unveiled during Mental Health Awareness Week, following the success of the first phase of installations at prominent sites such as Glasgow Central Station and Edinburgh Waverley.

Each bench features a plaque providing information on how to contact Samaritans and NHS 24’s Breathing Space service, acting as a tangible and accessible signpost for anyone seeking support in times of distress.

Arlene Dickson, Regional Development Lead for the Network Rail Partnership at Samaritans, highlighted the importance of the project:“It’s great to see more Breathing Space benches being installed across Scotland. The benches aren’t just a place to sit; they are a reminder that it’s okay to take time for yourself to pause and find clarity in what can be a busy and chaotic world. These small changes to our public spaces can make a significant difference by raising awareness about mental health and encouraging people to seek help when needed.”
